Here’s the latest and greatest from my monthly appearance on the YouTube and IHeartRadio show “Ask the Experts”. We discuss the importance of using an independent broker to help pick your Medicare plan, how much higher Medicare Supplement rate increases are getting in 2026 and several other topics of importance.
Plan G vs. Plan N: A New Perspective
Back when I started as an agent the question I’d get from those wanting to buy a Medicare Supplement (aka Medigap) was: should I get a Plan F or a Plan G? Plan F, back then, offered the most comprehensive coverage, but what did that actually mean?
In actuality, the only difference between a Plan F & G was F covered the Part B deductible and G didn’t. Back then, the Part B deductible was around $140 and an annual deductible, which means once someone met the deductible Plan G was the same as an F plan.
The premiums between an F and G would usually be $25-30 a month difference for most companies at the time. Furthermore, once the annual rate increases (say 8% annually to be conservative) began to be applied, over time, the disparity would grow. Say for instance you had a 65-year-old woman have a $140 Plan F per month or a $110 Plan G monthly offered, here’s what you could expect the monthly premiums to mature to if they had an 8% annual rate increase:
Plan F Plan G
65 $140 $115
70 $205.71 $168.98
75 $302.25 $248.28
Granted, the Part B premium does go up every year (in 2026 it’s at $283), you’re paying far more annually (at least double) than it would pay to have that covered.
Eventually though, in 2020, Plan F was removed for those who’ve aged into Medicare since 2020. Now, Plan G is the most comprehensive plan available to folks turning 65 and I’d just been selling it blindly since.
Then a client named Tim came to see me in December and he said he wanted a plan N. While N has been available since 2010, I’d only sold a few of them since it had a $20 doctor co-pay per visit and didn’t cover Part B excess charges. So, I got on my quote machine and gave him quotes for a 65-year-old male for a plan N. Much to my surprise the difference in price was stark! Much more so than I remember it being.
The most competitive Plan G was $140 monthly and on the same company it was $90 a month for a plan N! So, I asked him where he went to the doctor and all his docs took Medicare assignment (you can look this up on the Medicare.gov website).
The reason this is important is if a doctor or facility takes Medicare assignment, that means they can’t charge Medicare Part B excess charges. In fact, to even charge excess charges (the limit is up to 15% more than the Medicare allowable amount in my state, Tennessee), a doctor or facility must opt out of Medicare assignment, and only 3% of all physicians and facilities have even done that. Many of the ones who do opt out are in the mental health field and are usually psychiatrists or psychologists. So that took the sting off of Plan N not covering excess charges, since it’s exceedingly rare it would ever be an issue.
Beyond that, Plan N could charge a $20 co-pay to see the doctor whereas Plan G won’t. Unless you go to the doctor on a constant basis this isn’t that big a deal either. Furthermore, neither plan covers the Part B deductible, so until you meet the deductible, you’ll still be paying 20% of the doctor visit until you’ve met the deductible on N or G. The $20 co-pay only really matters once the Part B deductible has been met for the year!
To drive home the point, let’s look at the long-term difference between G & N from Tim’s perspective, if there was an 8% annual increase:
Plan G Plan N
65 $140 $90
70 $205.71 $132.24
75 $302.25 $194.30
It’s the law of compound interest in reverse! Tim had me convinced that Plan N was an extremely viable option. And, suffice-it-to-say, that’s what he went with.
In summary, Plan G may be the most comprehensive plan, just like Plan F was back-in-the-day, but it wasn’t usually the one that made the most sense from an overall cost perspective. Now Plan N seems positioned to be the one that stands out nowadays as the most cost-efficient. Granted both are excellent coverage for the price, but I won’t be sleeping on N as a good choice anymore!

Ask the Experts Episode 1 August 2025
Why Working with an Independent Medicare Broker Matters

Navigating the complexities of Medicare can be overwhelming, especially with the wide range of plans available. As an independent Medicare broker, my goal is to help you cut through the confusion and find the plan that suits your unique needs.
Since 2010, I have been serving the people of Tennessee as “Mr. Nice Guy Medicare Advisor,” offering unbiased guidance on Medicare options.
Here are seven key reasons why working with an independent Medicare plans agent like myself can make all the difference.
Independent and Unbiased Advice
One of the biggest advantages of working with an independent broker is that I am not tied to any specific insurance company. My allegiance is to you, the client, not to any one provider.
This independence allows me to give you unbiased advice, ensuring that the plan you choose aligns with your needs and budget, rather than steering you toward a particular insurer’s offering.
Personalized Plan Recommendations
Medicare is not a one-size-fits-all program. When I meet with you, I take the time to understand your healthcare needs, lifestyle, and financial situation.
From there, I recommend a plan that works for you personally, ensuring you get the coverage you truly need.
Continued Support Beyond Enrollment
My job doesn’t end once you’ve signed up for a plan. As your Medicare broker, I remain your advocate, ready to assist if any issues arise or if changes in your health require a plan reassessment. You’ll always have someone in your corner.
Simplifying the Medicare Maze
Medicare can be complicated, with numerous rules and options to consider. My role is to break down these complexities into clear, understandable information so that you can make an informed choice without feeling overwhelmed.
Flexibility to Compare Multiple Plans
Unlike agents who work for one insurance company, I have access to a wide variety of Medicare plans.
This flexibility allows me to compare options from different providers to find the best match for your healthcare needs, giving you more control over your choice.
Local Expertise with a Personal Touch
Being based in Franklin, TN, I understand the local healthcare landscape and the needs of our community.
This allows me to recommend plans that factor in local healthcare providers, hospitals, and pharmacies you prefer, offering a level of personalized service larger brokers often can’t.
Award-Winning Service You Can Trust
I’m proud to have been named a 2023 Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite, an award based on the trust and satisfaction of clients like you. Your Medicare coverage is crucial to your peace of mind, and I take that responsibility seriously.
The End Note
Choosing the right Medicare plan is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your healthcare. As a Medicare independent broker, I’m here to provide personalized, unbiased advice tailored to your needs.
With my ongoing support and local expertise, you can trust that I’ll be by your side, helping you make the best choices for your future. Let me simplify Medicare for you so you can focus on enjoying life with the coverage you deserve.
An AEP Unlike Any Other By Randy W. Hall

The Inflation Reduction Act (which goes into effect January 1, 2025) is significantly impacting Medicare beneficiaries. Some outcomes will be positive as it is putting a maximum out-of-pocket on Part D Prescription Drug Costs at $2000 as well as a payment plan throughout the year to smooth prescription costs.
However, it will negatively impact many others, because plans had to change benefits and or premiums to accommodate for the maximum out-of-pocket. Other significant changes this year are due to important network changes and some companies pulling out of counties or significantly changing their benefit structure. As always, your needs are unique to you and there’s no such thing as “a best” plan.
Most years only 25% of people explore their options, this year 90% will be exploring appropriate solutions.
I’ve always approached Medicare plans as a year-by-year basis and this year is more important to get a review done more than ever. This year and next year will see many more changes than the previous 15 years I’ve been doing this.
If you want an unbiased overview of your plan options for 2025 we would be proud to do so with no cost or obligation. It’s my specialty and passion. I want no one to be caught by surprise with benefits that don’t meet their needs or even worse, finding themselves with only Original Medicare as their only coverage. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us for help during this uncertain time.
I look forward to speaking with you and making 2025 just an inconvenient blip for your Medicare plan going forward.

We are approaching Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which runs Oct. 15th– Dec. 7th.

Your Medicare Advantage Plan will be going through some changes for 2025. Mainly due to the Inflation Reduction Act, there will be unprecedented changes. Complete detailed plan changes will be made available to the public on October 1, 2024, although you may receive an Annual Notice of Change from your plan prior to this date.
***WE’LL BE CALLING YOU*** You will be receiving a call from our office during the first two weeks of October to explain the plan changes for 2025. If you want to discuss your potential options we can discuss over the phone, at any of the YMCA’s listed on the back of this letter, in-person at your house, or our new Franklin office (381 Riverside Dr. Suite 400, Zip 37064).

Every year you’ll begin to see tv commercials, ads, and receive mail regarding plans (if you haven’t already). You will also receive many phone calls from call centers trying to entice you to make changes. Please DON’T call any numbers on mailings or on the TV as most are overseas call centers. Rest assured we are always monitoring any changes to your plan and this year will see more changes than normal. We carry as many plans as possible and can help you find the plan that meets your needs and wants for your healthcare if changes are appropriate for you.
This year more than ever we want to make sure you are on the best plan for you with so many changes. Thanks for trusting your Medicare coverage to me!

Expert Tips on How to Avoid Common Medicare Mistakes

Navigating Medicare can be overwhelming, but with the right guidance, you can avoid costly errors and ensure you’re getting the benefits you need.
As a Medicare expert based in Franklin, TN, I’ve spent over thirteen years helping clients with Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans.
Here’s my expert Medicare advice on how to sidestep common Medicare mistakes.
Understand Your Enrollment Periods
One of the most frequent mistakes is missing key enrollment periods. Medicare has specific times when you can sign up or make changes to your coverage.
Be aware of your Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible, the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for making changes, and the Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) for qualifying life events. Missing these deadlines can result in penalties or gaps in coverage.
Compare Plans Thoroughly
Many people assume that all Medicare plans are the same, but that’s far from the truth.
With a wide range of Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans available, it’s crucial to compare them based on coverage options, costs, and provider networks.
Don’t settle for the first plan you come across—take the time to evaluate your choices thoroughly.
Review Your Plan Annually
Medicare plans are not one-size-fits-all, and what worked for you last year might not be the best option this year.
Annual changes in coverage, premiums, and provider networks mean that your current plan may no longer be the best fit. Review your plan every year during the AEP to ensure it still meets your needs.
Be Aware of Coverage Gaps
Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Many people are surprised to learn about gaps in coverage, such as out-of-pocket costs for certain services or prescription drugs.
Understanding these gaps and exploring supplemental insurance options can help you avoid unexpected expenses.
Verify Provider Networks
Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, check whether your preferred healthcare providers and facilities are included in the plan’s network.
Going out-of-network can lead to higher costs or even denied claims. Ensuring that your doctors and specialists are covered by your plan can save you money and hassle.
Avoid Automatic Enrollment Assumptions
Some people mistakenly believe that they will be automatically enrolled in the best Medicare plan for their needs. However, Medicare does not automatically enroll you in the most comprehensive or cost-effective plan.
You are responsible for making informed choices and actively enrolling in the plans that best suit your healthcare needs and financial situation.
Seek Professional Guidance
Navigating Medicare can be complex, and getting personalized advice from a Medicare expert can make a significant difference.
As someone who has been helping clients for over a decade, I strongly recommend seeking professional guidance to ensure you understand your options and make the best decisions for your healthcare.
The End Note
By remembering these tips and working with a knowledgeable Medicare advisor, you can avoid common pitfalls and maximize your Medicare benefits.

What We Actually Do for Our Clients
I’ve been an independent Medicare insurance broker since 2010 and have been lucky enough to have a nice book-of-business of folks I’ve helped. Some of my clients do go all the way back to when I was a rookie agent and finding my way!
One of the reasons why, according to them, is I remind them several times annually who I am and if they need my help with anything related to their Medicare plan, I’m responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, in my industry, there’s a lot of turnover (91% or more of agents specializing in Medicare don’t make it past their first 18 months in business before quitting). Not only that, those who sign up under someone may never, or rarely, hear back from the person once they enrolled them in their plan.
Early on I realized that it was far easier to keep a client than to go get new ones. So, I decided, especially for my Medicare Advantage clients, to give them a call every October to check in on them and see how their particular plan was working for them. Furthermore, if they wanted to do a complimentary Medicare review, I’d rather be the one doing it than someone else. Besides, one of the benefits of being a broker is I can offer multiple options in terms of plans and companies.
Since these Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans change their formularies and co-pays annually, as an independent agent, I knew that what was good when I enrolled someone, was subject to change. And if someone’s going to change, they could still keep me as an agent.
I also mail my clients a letter every September to remind them I’ll be reaching out to them. In addition we also mention they’re about to be hit with tons of telemarketing calls, have their mailboxes filled with confusing information and non-stop TV & radio ads that beckon you to call them. We caution them not to do that as they’ll likely be calling overseas and speaking to people who don’t know their local market and won’t give advice tailored to their needs.
But the most important thing I do for my clients is to actually help them if they ever run into an issue with their plan, or don’t know where to start to take advantage of a benefit, amongst other things. I pride myself on the personal touch and my clients will tell you I go above and beyond to help them. I have many 5-star reviews on Google business so you don’t have to take my word for it 😊
